I'm sure he could use the help. Last summer I went and looked at this car when it was in pieces. The owner at the time claimed the engine was an 1835. Now this was three or four different owners before the guy you bought it from but it looks to be the same engine. The owner at the time had no experience with vw's and I didn't pay any attention to the pile of parts. Good luck with it, it'll be worth when its road worthy.

First of all your hose on the vacuum diaphragm on the distributor is going to the wrong spot on the carburetor. It needs to go on the upper driver side of the carburetor you have it on the retard side for the dual vacuum distributer. That could be your idle issue. You have a 34 PICT-3 carburetor it works fine for a stock or mild engine as long as its set correctly. Thank you for your help everyone. Im keepin the bug at a friends house until i can get it running good. So I will run a wire fromt the +on the coil to the sielnoid on the carb. Then look for another vaccume hookup on the driverside of the carb. So is the spot where the vaccume line is ran right now gonna be open or am I missing another vaccume line?

Did some more research. I'll more the vaccume line to the other side of the carb (advance) and leave the (retard) one that has the line now alone?

You have my favorite engine block its a 1970 only engine 1600cc with single port heads. It looks like you have dual port heads no big deal they interchange. If someone installed a different crank or larger pistons your motor could be any size. To verify you will need to pull the heads and measure the stroke and bore.

Did some more work on the baja today, its at my friends house and I forgot to bring my camera. First we made a base for the fuel cell, bent a couple straps. It fits in the back perfect. We picked up the wrong fitting for the fuel vent, So I'll have to pick up another one on wednesday.
Then we moved on to the pushrod tubes(not as hard as I thought it was gonna be). While we were in there we also adjusted the valves.
Still have the problem with the carb(wont idle). I checked the diesling sielnoid. Took the carb out cleaned everything. With the automatic choke, I read in VW book how to disarm it. It says to loosen the 3 screws and turn it until the butterfly is open. To get my car to idle I have to turn it until the butterfly is almost completly closed, If it opens just a littlebit the car dies. Im not sure what to do.
Finally I took it for a spin if you are just crusing then get on it, it falls on its face, no power and backfires, Also backfires while ideling. While driving it poped out of first twice after the second time it will only go into first no other gears. Something may have come loose or poped out, it was too dark and we decieded to call it a day.
While shifting I find myself leaning forward to reach the shifter. I was thinking about buying the scat shifter that is angled back towards the driver. Are these any good?

Back firing is usually caused by timing being off. Usually if it pops out the exhaust its to far advanced if it pops out the carb its to far retarded.
If you have to leave the choke closed for your engine to run. Either your carb is set way to lean or you have air entering the intake system somewhere.
Things to check that would allow air in the system.
Carb base gasket Intake boots on the manifold Intake base gaskets Air leaking at throttle shafts at the carb Are all unused vacuum ports plugged on carb and manifold

Yeah all vacuum lines are either hooked up or plugged. Everytjime you Push the gas your rev up the engine. Gas pours out of passanger side of the carb, I think its the acclerator pump, could air be getting sucked in through there?
