I always wondered what was the point of these three funky washer like things spanning the CV bolts. Someone once told me they distribute the load from the bolts...but lets be realistic, they really can not distribute much of the bolts load... So if VW used them there must be something to it, but what?

Are they hardened? If they are, it's almost certainly to distribute load when they are being torqued.

I can't imagine the portion spanning between the two bolts doing jack squat for load distribution...I mean....we aren't talking about a 1/4in thick sheet of steel here...which is why I am left wondering what the point of it is. I just can't see this piece being any more effective in distributing load than simple washers. It seems to me that the load would still be very localized in the area immediately surrounding each of the two bolts while the load in the span would be minimal due to the deflection properties of the steel, even if it was hardened. Do you kinda see what I am getting at? Or am I just crazy

Possibly keeps bolt heads from pulling through cv boot ring. Also I have found that the bolts loosen on there own more frequently if those spanners aren't on there.

MAGIC!!!!!! I think maybe spreads torque out so the back and forth power don't work them out? ?

Guys, if it's hardened, it's there to prevent damage to the CV joints. It's a single piece, spanning two bolts to prevent it from moving or turning.
It's fairly common practice to use oddly shaped washers like this to prevent soft washers from being used. Hardened washers are virtually indistinguishable from non-hardened washers.

They use this same type of washer on my turbo.
