Where does a mostly stock 1500sp red line at? Also, what is a good cruising rpm when driving down the highway?

Ok... I have some experience on this one Stock stuff, that is.... stock carb and all, really have a built in rev limiter (accelerating, not oops I went from 4th to 2nd!!!) so In a way you dont have to worry about it. I have found that vw engines (again stock) like to hover around 3000 rpm. In a bus you really can burn em out as you cant really hear em and the high gearing works against em. In a bug that is stock they are pretty much bullet proof and cruising speed is redline!!! Really... by design... Now in modified (duel carbs, and distributor, exhaust but a stock case) you dont really want to go much over 5000-6000. Keep in mind the engine will not last much more than around 75,000 in this mode. You want to play you are gunna pay eventually. I am in this mode currently and kinda accept the consequenses as they are kinda easy to rebuild and with the amount of miles I drive a year it will take well over ten years to do this. Heck I am ok with that. Ultra mod (new everything, nothing is stock) Really depends on the internals, but Ive heard 8000-10000 rpm is not abnormal. Life expenctancy around 50,000 or less if nitro is involved Ive done this in my buggy. It was cool and the balanced crank / modded heads/ cam makes it a whole nuther animal.

Stock vw engine with OEM valve springs red line (valve floating) at about 4500rpms. VW cooling fans were designed to cool best at around 3200 to 3400rpms.

Thanks guys thats what I was hoping for. With the tires I have on right now, at 60 mph, I'm running about 3200 rpm. I was just curious for my trip to martin next this weekend.

Strangly enough with my current trans I turn around 5500 rpm at 70mph. The engine does not seem to mind much but I want to eventually get a freeway flyer to get me back down to 3500 or so. Engine is comming out after the Mam trip for trans mounts/clutch so maybe Ill get it done then. Anyone know of any deals on swing axle freeway flyer?? Dan
