My old man use to be head wrench at Cadillac Overall(Arrow), here in Kalamazoo, They use to pull the engine from Econoline Vans and the big box vans thru the passenger door, thru the tunnel cover. Only took him a couple of hours, had it down to a science. The most time consumeing thing was to pull the door , tunnel cover and passenger seat. I got to hold the light and listen to the cuzin' Later Kenn

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA Well this one is commin out the front. I dont know the year but they made it so the front crossmember comes out. That makes it possible (but hard) to take it out of the front. THIS IS THE HARDEST ENGINE JOB IVE EVER.......EVER done. Oh well. It has to happen. Ill probably be pullin it mon or tues. All I got left is flexplate bolts, starter, exh manifold flange bolts (only part Im dreading), motor mounts and its out. Not really excited about hooking back up all the smog crap there is TONS of it. Deff not an air cooled VW Dan

I feel for you, Dan. I hate changing plugs on a van, let alone think about pulling the motor. You are a good man.

Uuuuuuuuuuuummmmm Well the tragedy about all this is I replaced and had the trans rebuilt last year, then I rebuilt the front end, so all the ball jounts and tie rod ends ect ect are new. I toyed with the idea of replacing the steering gear but Ive decided that the thing just has crappy on center feel due to the suspension type and to move on. So the plan is to do a full regasket job on the "new" motor and then throw it in. I may replace the trans pan gasket as it is cork and leaks. Ill replace it with a felpro rubber one. On the "new" motor I allready pulled the heads and such and will be taking em to work monday to go through everything and parts clean em. The new motor is pretty clean inside but the intake tracks have some rust in em from sitting. I just want everything as right as possible. Oh yea Im disabling the air pump system. It is amazing how complicated they made the engine just so it would blow some air into the cat when it is cold and running rich. STUPID FORD!!! Im told this will gain me 10hp and will not hurt anything. Plus its leass crap to cram back into the engine compartment. Dan

Why I use castrol and not penzoil. Also the next bonehead that says its not important to change your oil every 3000 miles should be shown this. This motor would have lasted forever if not for the abuse and lack of maintenance

That is amazing. I can't believe all the sludge in there.

Hey Dan,
Wow, that sludge is awful. I've heard that switching brands a lot can also have ill affects as the additives don't always play nice.
The surest way to go is to change the oil every time you start it up, like the Velo Solex ;D
Good luck with the engine change!

Couple of speed bumps yesterday. Found a crack in the "new" block in a water jacket. Was necesary to weld up (wasted the whole day screwing around with this!!). Then found out the timing cover which is also the base for the water pump is different from the van engine. SOOOOOOooooooooo the timing cover off the "new" motor I just put the front seal on and speant an hour cleaning is useless!!!!@#$%^& Anyway Today i got to install a new seal on the old timing cover and clean it Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, Bad garage day. Hopeful that I can get cought up today.

Engine is al together and in veh. Pretty much all I have left to do is put in the radiator, starter, flexplate bolts exhaust, fluids and start!!! Im thinking two days. What an unpleasent job. I wish It were a vw bus as it would be a lot easier to work on, but alas I need this big huge overpowered veh for my airplane hobbie and camping/towing. Oh well almost done.
