First off, thanks for having me on the forum. My dad was always a volkswagen guy and as such I grew up in busses and bugs and my childhood memories are littered w/ tidbits like hanging out the side door of a bus like a garbage man hanging off a truck while we drove around the yard, my dad pulling a motor w a jack and my skateboard, or my brother driving a bug around w no body on it like a go kart. And the smell of hot basketweave vinyl seats in the middle of summer will be forever burnt into my soul. Now it's my turn, lol. After years of looking at overpriced busses I'd never afford, I stumble across a craigslist ad for a 73 sportsmobile for 700 bucks. I reply to the ad and the guy lives a mile from my house. I go to check it out and its almost black from tree sap, the slider doesn't work right, the interor is in a pile on the floor, and the headliner is hanging down on the back seat. I say "its perfect! I'll take it!" Had it towed to my house the next day. My girlfriend texts me at work and says that she thinks the garbage man dropped off a bigger dumpster for some reason....in her defense, plastic just went up on the windows for winter and it is the same color...but I digress, I'm the vw fan, not her...she would have been happier w a bigger dumpster. Unfortunately, I have no pictures of the bus when it got dropped off, just the ones I took after a day of scrubbing. So now I get to share my vw journey w/ you.

I decide to gut everything, I must have spent an hour trying to find the bolts for the front seats (I know a few of you are snickering right now)...i finally say,"its a vw, theres got to be an overly simple way these pull out, so i grab the passenger seat, pull up, and what do you know? The seat pops right out...thanks, volkswagen...

I get the inside scrubbed up and everything is solid. This is a gem. A small hole in each of the dog legs, but interior is good aside from a little surface rust, and the bottom is cherry, just some paint peeling off.

I take a wire wheel to any surface rust and take it to bare metal, and give it a coat of self etching primer, then an almond enamel, which i didnt get pics of, but a decent match to the oem.

Then i layed some plyboard down, cut a hole in the plyboard and mounted a low flushmount table base to the floor.

Sound deadening, some electrical wiring for shore power, and carpet going in. I may live in this some day, i want it to be comfy Sound deadening is quick roof from home depot. Also, the bed in there was all bent and pretty jenky. I used parts from the old one and rewelded the frame, squared it up, made some supports, and moved it from the left side to the right side of the bus, i wasnt going to use the old closet anyway, it was in pretty rough shape and i wanted all the storage along the side away from the slider so it felt roomier and unobstructed.
