Very cool and Id want one too but what is this about only up to 64? what is the diff between a 64 and a 66?? Also it seems a little pricy considering what you get, I wonder if we could get some aluminum chanel and do this ourselves. Unfortunatly while I have a mig I donw weld aluminum BUT I have a very good friend who does I may have to call in a favor. Im going to go back and look at it again to see how it is hinged at the top. Also I wonder how well this would seal. I dont need any leaks. I think it opens up plenty and Im sure at speed it would be one hell of an air conditioner

Heres a link to a guy thats been working on one for a while now. Toward the end of the thread theres a guy that writes about the kit posted above, it sounds like he wasn't impressed. I'd be very interested if they were a little cheaper. We're vw owners are'nt we all cheap, or is it just me?

Questions first.

What is the difference between the windshield for a 66 and a 63? How well does the windshield seal for air leaks and water leaks? How does the piano hinge attatch to the body (I know screws) but to what part of the body? There is a lot of interest in your product in our vw club (goodvolks in michigan) Im sure one of us is going to take the pluge to see how it works.


The difference between the windshield for a 66 and a 63 is that from 65-77 hardtops, the windshield has a slight curve to the face of the windshield. If you were to stand next to a 66 bug and carefully look across the front of the windshield from say the driver side, you will notice a slight curve. This makes the bends a little more tricky, as the frame needs to be bent two different ways. I havent done any of the 65-77 hardtops just yet, however, my 65 vert has the same style of curved windshield, so I know it is do-able. The vert windshields are different in size from the hardtops, so I cant use mine as a pattern, unfortunately.

Sealing is done by using a weatherstripping that goes around the inside of the car's windshield frame. When the safari is installed(correctly) it will seal against this weatherstripping. The safari frame itself also has weather stripping between the frame and the glass, to help with sealing and damage to the galss itself.

The piano hinge attaches to the inside lip of the car's windshield frame. Once the original windshield is removed, you will notice abaout an 1 1/4" or so of a lip that you would be securing the hinge to. I use self tapping screws in my kits, so attaching is easier once a mark is made. That way you dont have to drill. Always measure twice and install once!

You are definitely making a big purchase, so you are doing the right thing by doing your homework. Just a heads up, if you want to do more research on this, Wolfgang International says that they are going to be selling their Bug safari kits in February sometime. I think it might even be ready as soon as Feb. 1st. They said that they will be doing the kit for 58-64 bugs. You might want to check theirs out as well. That way you have an option, as I never had that when I was looking for one of these.

I just curious with the wipers and wiper arms at the bottom of the windshield and the hinge at the top. The wipers will be in the way of the opening windshield. Do you just remove the wipers and arms to swing the windshield out?

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm never thought of that (wipers). Your a detail oriented person. Im a duct tape oriented person Glad you brought it up. Ill have to look at pics. It seems the cooler the mod the more it makes your car undrivable I may have to pass on this mod for now.
