Mike, I drove a 59' bug one winter and found 1) drive with windows cracked(vent) 2) breathe into your coat 3) Drive with one hand and scrape with the other. Also I set up two parking brake handles one to either rear brake and I could go flying into the corner and not have to steer, just grab that brake handle and zip around like a sling shot. It was a blast from the past. Have fun. Later Kenn

Hey Kenn,I know all about the thrill ::)Of winter VW driving,I have a 65 that I drove one winter up here ;D Scraper & all hooked up a oil cooler/heater w/fan in the back and removed the passenger seat bolted a steel milk crate to the floor with a 20lbs propane and gas heater,IT worked really well but steamed up the windows ;D so instead of a scraper I used a Shamee cracked a window for fumes and freash air but it was warm Hydralic steering brake a must!!! ;D ;D ;D The Bug rusted so bad from one season it's a Baja now ,Madmike

My car has a pretty bad oil leak, so today I dropped the engine. This was a first for me, but it went pretty well, it took about an hour and a half. I have the muir book but didn't use it much. I think I did it backwards though, I jacked the car up first then dropped the engine, instead of loosening the engine and lifting the car off of it. I spent probably 30 mins jacking the car up and setting the jack stands, by the time I realized I was doing it backwards it was too late. It took 30 min to jack up because my car is too low to get a jack under it, so jacking it up is tedious process and I wasn't doing it all over again so I figured I would test my luck and it worked out. Now I'm waitning on a seal kit so it can go back in.

Jerry, I think it is actually more common to lift the car and drop the motor. That is the way I have always done it.

Cool picture Mike, That sounds like a good time I would have liked to be there.
My dad and I went out and worked on the Baja pan some. I have the top mostly down to bare metal so we flipped it over and scraped all the undercoating off the bottom to get ready to strip that side down to bare metal.

Ummm I broke the RF headlight cover on my bug!! How? Ummm Im not totally sure. But Im thinking it has to do with a jump shot with a soup can that was ment to land in the recycling bucket (located right in front of my bug, she is very eco...) anyway it glanced off the bug then made it into the bucket (not on purpose of course) I didnt notice any damage then but when I took the bug out to tast some sunshine today there it was a cracked headlamp cover!! AAAAAAck Something else to add to the list of spring necesities. Anyone got one??

Started the '63 today and drove it into the sunlight, about 10 foot out of the garage. Cleaned the garage a little too.

I did not have a great day ether dansam I was cleaning up the Ghia block to remove the yellow paint with various wire wheels. When a 13mm nut fell into the case through the fuel pump hole. I still proceeded to clean the block and it looks very nice and shiny. I am having a lot of trouble with all of the nooks crannies. I am thinking of just splitting the case to remove the nut and just have the case sand blasted. It just honks me off the the engine ran good very good and now I have to rip it apart more but it will be fully cleaned.
