European Motorworks is a really cool place for Type 4 stuff, and I have great respect for them. One thing that has always caught my eye at their store is the header they designed for engines with the factory blower housing. This baby right here. Pretty cool how it exits out the back and over the top of the engine, hu? Well, being the Dutch kid that I am, I came up with an idea. DaveT gave me some manifolds, old heater boxes cut down to the pipes at the center. Why not turn them around so they exit to the back of the engine, like the Porsche 914? Then I could use a collector attached to the manifolds, and make a pipe to exit over the engine that bolts to the three bolt flange on the collector. Hey, it may not be as pretty as the chromed EMW header, but it would probably work just as good, and I could easy build it for less than 100 bucks. Hey, even rattle can black header paint works alright for a year or so. when it starts getting ugly, respray it and be done with it. Heck, this is a frickin' woods buggy, not a show car.

I pulled the pistons today. It was a piece of cake. Simply pull one of the snap rings off the piston, and push out the wrist pin enough to remove the piston from the rod. The pistons are in amazing condition. It must have had low miles on the engine. The skirts have minimal wear, no collapsed skirts, and are original 93mm Mahle pistons. Top notch quality parts. Real keepers. These engines have real snap rings, not the cheesy wire pieces Type 1 engines have that I have seen fail and destroy the pistons and cylinders. Massive rods. Original Mahle Pistons. Takes only a couple minutes to pull all four pistons. Piece of cake!

Removing the big honkin' 24mm lifters. No need to split the case on a Type 4 to remove or install the lifters. They just slide right in and out of the bores, which are 5mm larger than the Type 1 engines. These will be sent to European Motorworks to be reground along with the Cam. EMW has a cool exchange program. Send them your cam and lifters, and they will send you back a reground set. $40 for the cam, $40 for a set of 8 lifters.

Hey Dirk,Now to quit dink'in around with them 'Bus' carbs and step up to some IDF's Buggy's lookin good!!!! Mike, you are right on about the IDF carbs. A nice set of 40's would be perfect for this engine. That being said, I am going to fix up the factory carbs. Whether I use them or sell them when finished, I have yet to see. My guess is I will probably run them, at least for a little while. The stock 1.8 is plenty of motor for a light buggy. If I find a set of IDF carbs that I just can't pass up, well guess what? IDF's it will be!

Now that the block is apart I can wrap the cam and lifters up in some oily paper and ship them to European Motorworks in exchange for a reground set.

Switching gears for a little bit and work on the front beam while the weather is still good. Added the drivers side shock tower gusset and got a shock mount welded onto the passenger side tower while the drivers side cooled off.
And then it got dark.
Picture or two tomorrow...maybe.
