Bummer. Ive seen stuff like this happen before. Usually main bearing related. Once saw a crankshaft break in the middle. Id still tear it down to find out what happened and to save whatever parts/bolts and such that you can.

Well..........the verdict is in! For whatever reason, I don't think I set the crank endplay correctly. I took the motor apart and found the thrust bearing froze to the crank. It didn't take too much persuasion to knock the bearing off with a metal punch though. Before I took the flywheel off the last time, I measured end play and it was o.k. After removing the flywheel, I set the 3 shims on the workbench. Unfortunately, I had 3 shims in another area of my bench that went on the engine when I re-installed the flywheel. This is a reminder to keep my work bench clear! I will be swapping the current motor from my '73 Super Beetle into my '65 Convertible to replace this engine. My '73 is getting it's original motor align-bored and put back in it's original home. thegoodvolks.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=tech&action=display&thread=5669

I check end play three times when building engines. The last check is right after final torque of the flywheel.

Clinton, when do you do the other 2 checks during the engine build?

When trial fitting the crank and main bearings fit and again on a full trial assembly.

I should point out that my first reading is with one shim just to see where I am at. Then I figure what the other two shims should be. Once I think I may have the right shim stack I do another reading. This may take several tries to get it right. Good luck with your firs build.

I understand. Install a shim, take a measurement, do the math to figure out thickness needed for other two shims. Thanks Clinton. It's certainly been a learning experienc.
