While my engine is finally running and I can enjoy a few drives, it is running rich. It blows rich black smoke. The mixture screws have no effect on rpms or reducing the the black smoke. Being in a tub buggy its difficult to see down the throat of the carbs to see if the accel nozzle is dripping during idle, even using a mirror its hard to tell.
engine 1641 FI heads w/ 35 x32 valves, 3 angle, light port and polish, hi rev bug pack springs, 1.4 rockers stock cam kadron carbs, rebuilt throttle bodies, bigger jets(kaddie shack ground off jet sizes) 30mm vents 1 3/8 dual buggy mega exhaust
I took the new idle jets out(think they might be 60 or 62.5's) and I put the 55's back in. No more black smoke or rich hydrocarbon smell. Should I change the mains back to the 130's and the 28mm vents? I don't to run lean and overheat the engine. I'm also wondering if the too large idles would make the mixture screw adjustments ineffective? How would the engine behave if the mains are too big?
Thanks...Steve

I just drove it the way I have it now. It's a turd! First gear was good, accelerated good. Second gear was ok as soon as I went into 2nd. As the engine wound up, close to shifting into 3rd, it started popping like crazy. So that 55 idle jet is too small.

Vents are to big for a 1641 leave in them 55's and drop to the 28 vents ,you may need to reinstall the 130 mains

I was working on removing the carbs to do what madmike suggested and an intake stud stripped out. I got the nut cut off but now I have a stud to replace. I assume it will need heat, is mapp gas hot enough to do what I need? Think I am also going to do 2 exhaust studs that are looking pretty bad.

It sounds like I should just take the head into a shop to have it done. But nooo, I have to break it worse first. I'll try the intake stud first, probably have the best luck with it

Now I've done it!!! Got the threads cleaned up on the intake, when I put the torque wrench on the intake I cracked the mount on the aluminum truehaft intake. It runs but whistles through the intake leak.

Madmike....I thought about jb weld, might be worth a try. Would you do it with the manifold bolted in place and just seal up the crack? I know it has to be just right or it will leak from the seal surface.
Dustin....I have one of those horrible chrome dial regulators so it's hard to set it exactly but it settles in about 1.5-1.75lbs. One notch less is under 1lb and one notch up is over 2lbs.

I would just have it welded. JB Weld is great stuff, but it will crack or break when when it is torqued, or when the engine expands or contacts.
If it's easy to do, you might try it...but if you only want to do it once, have it welded.
MadMike is right about letting it harden for at least 24 hours, it's important.
Also, don't play around with JB Qwick, it's not nearly as strong as JB Weld.

Harley, there is a guy in battle creek that can get the studs out if you can't. He welds a nut to it and backs it out. He did two for me. Also, there is a guy nearby that welds cases and heads. I don't know who he is but I can find out if you are interested. Shoot me a PM if you want more info.

I got a pair of steel intakes from Kenn. Put them on and took off down the road. Its running pretty decent. I might play with jet size some later, right now I just want to enjoy driving around. I will post any changes I make and fuel mileage after I get some miles on it.

I am around 28 mpg, would be better but I like the sound of rapid acceleration to much! Last couple days though it has been running sluggish with a miss. I checked the valve lash, made small adjustments but good there. timing is set to 30 full advance. Cylinder one plug was dark, plug #2 was kinda brownish. So I assume my miss is one #1. Plugs 3 & 4 were dark but not real heavy like #1. I was also thinking that maybe the throttle rods vibrated out of sync so I double checked the sync. I will be tearing the carbs apart again.
