I had a close encounter with a deer and an even closer encounter with the ditch on my way to work this morning with my GTI. Smashed up the fender and bumper but drove to work. Still handles and drives fine but needs some cosmetics

Ouch! Sounds like you minimized the damage by going to the ditch. Either way, not fun!
The most important thing--you were not hurt (at least you did not indicate you had any injuries). You got lucky.

Yeah I am fine, It felt like it was going to be alot worse. I know your supposed to just hit the deer thats what everyone tells you but when that deer was running across the road all I could think about was not hitting it. And in this case the damage is less than if I had hit it.

Dustin good thing you were not driving a Beetle. If I remember correctly all or the front end pieces are removable from the GTI unlike a Beetle.

Like AJ says, glad you wern't in the Bug. I destroyed a 72 Super with deer damage. It was drivable after I took the bumper off, but tweaked pretty bad. Ask Beth about "The Pumpkin" if you get a chance (car was orange). She is soooooooo tired of me saying "poor pumpkin". The car has been gone 10yrs or so and I still say "poor pumpkin" from time to time.

Yes if it were my Bug I would be really really really upset. I am bummed but better things will come for the GTI as a result. I'll have to ask Beth about "poor pumkin" now so I can get her reaction haha.

I feel the same way about them. I've hit more with a vehicle than some guys have shot.

Never hit a deer myself (knock on wood), but have come close..the day after I bought my trailblazer, I drove over a hill, on icy roads, 4 deer were standing at the bottom...it was so surreal, I hit the breaks..sliding and trying to stay on the road, and miss the deer. They just kinda..parted (slowly) to the side of the road. I dont know how I missed them. I know your heart was racing, just like mine did...whew

Dustin
You might want to just hit the deer next time because next time there could be a tree in the ditch. Trees don't move or splatter and could hurt worse.

A P.S. to my last post glad your in one piece Dustin with the addition of comp on your insurance you can hit them Dam-n deer and they pay for repairs it doesn't cost that much either. Just tell them the deer hit you not you hit the deer. I've hit a number of them with vehicles and even totaled a s-10 hitting three at the same time it wasn't pretty, but it was covered. Later Kenn
