Just read a great rant on over restored cars vs. original patina. www.cal-look.com/ramblings_patina.shtmlI have to admit, I kinda agree. Some cars were just meant to be driven and the VW is one. A perfect car can't be driven, it has to sit in the garage, under a cover only coming out on a sunny show day. I don't mind a nice paint job, but the driving's the fun.

I hear ya, if its too nice to drive whats the point in having it. Luckily I don't have that problem. If I want something nice to look at that can't be exposed to the elements I'll buy a big screen tv.

I really agree from both angles, I settled on a cheap 100.00 paint job. It satisfies the wife who does not appreciate PATINA and I can touch up real easy and not feel bad trashing in a parking lot!!

And I think this is exactly why I am more excited about my blue 'patina' car than my beige car.

Well just to add fuel to the fire I to like that old style patina cars too. Their is a difference between patina and rust. My Ghia was sprayed at least twice with the same color before I got it with rust in the usual spaces. I was not able to save the old patina so I had fun. If my Ghia had to old patina look to it I would just let it be. Personally I would like my bus to have the old patina look to but I will have to wait and see.

Patina gets no respect from the car show crowd. I heard a woman remark about my '67 at a show, "What's that doing here?"
VW guys get it though. An all original un-restored car with faded paint is a time capsule. I've had guys with high dollar restorations check out my cars to see "Just how is that part supposed to fit?"
The rust finally required attention on my '67 and the time was right so I had it painted. But I know it was done right. Some of these "restored" cars have such a mix of parts, you can't tell what year they are. If you are looking for a project, pick a car with original paint over a car that is glossy but has been painted several times. Who knows how much bondo is in it?
