No interest here but I do like the fact that one can brew new life into an old wore out bug.

Kirby, I'm also interested in the Volksrod, after seeing what Ruffuss looked like without fenders and in bare metal during his resto. I've kinda been looking for a used up Type 181 to build one out of. It would be hard for me to cut up either a Thing or a bug or any other VW for that matter that still had even a little life to it. The days of $10.,$20 or even $100 V-dubs is long since gone, but it does hurt to look and hope a likely canidate will appear. I think of some of the vehicles I've owned and cut up I shutter and think what was I thinking appearantly I wasn't. Later Kenn

I love the looks of these things. Got one as my laptop wallpaper. I've been looking carefully at old tired Baja's that are already cut up as potential candidates for just such a conversion.

I don't think I could cut a solid bug. I've seen these without the chopped top and they just don't look right so some modifcation is required.

I like them, but I wouldn't cut up a good bug either. One of the guys in our gang back in Louisiana has one:

I think that they are cool because its kind or bringing back the look of the old school rods from before my time. I can never own one because its hard enough for me to fit in a beetle. There is no way I can fit into one with a chopped top. This is my style....

There cool and all. but when I look at one with a rag top or oval or even split window!! I think that could be a nice cal looker and be swapped bacl to stock if need be. Mind you Im no prude Ive done lots of mods to my own cars. But.......... To swap to a solid front axle??? It seems like you are going backwards, well maybe thats the point..... Ok I like em but why not do it only to fiberglass ( fAKE) bodied bugs Dan

It would be cool if someone made kits of Volksrods so no Bugs had to be harmed but the point of them is budget so who knows. Maybe Bug kits like some of the muscle cars are in the future. Also check out www.volksrods.com for more info.

When I bought my '70, I had every intention of extending the front beam on top of what I already did (fenderless). I actually bought the beam extension that is shown on the Volksrods website (the Tinbeater version). It was a marvelous piece of engineering, but I just could not see myself cutting up the front end (essentially removing the spare tire well) putting in the extender, extending the steering shaft, etc. Since I have the metal sunroof, I did not favor chopping the top either. I love those "true" Volksrods, but did not want to take that plunge.
Everything I did to my car is reversible, so I have options.

Thanks, Dustin...I will do that later this weekend. Since I last posted pics in the intro forum, I've tweaked the design a little. I moved the headlights more forward and down so the front end does not look so high.
Also, I am just finishing up the fabrication of front "bumperettes." I took an old/crusty bumper from a pre-68, cut two small sections, formed the ends and will mount them using the hardware that goes with that vintage bumper. The design is similar to the Plymouth Prowler bumper. I think it will look good.

I will likely install drop spindles and lower the rear next spring. We'll see how things go after this latest round of mods.
