If you can weigh each end of the rod, it is best to have all the piston pin ends of the rods the same and all the crank end of the rods the same. Weighing each end requires a block with a pin for the end not being weighed to pivot on.
I've always just had this done by a machine shop, but the idea of doing it at home is appealing

I guess doing the budget balance has some merit. Sounds like you're trying to balance only certain parts. The real deal is to have the whole rotating mass balanced. This would include the pulley, crank, rods, pistons, flywheel & pressure plate.
Don't know when yet, but when I put together a 1915; I'll have Bob Snyder balance the engine. It isn't cheap, but for me its worth it. Pretty much any automotive machine can do the work.

The Rocky and Bullwinkle, Dudley Do-Right, and George of the Jungle are some of the best re-run cartoons on still. Without them there would be no Simpson's, Family Guy or South Park. www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUtbhoYTHcIIt looks like they are bringing Sherman and Mr Peabody to the big screen in 2014 www.imdb.com/title/tt0864835/

It'll be interesting to see what it finally weighs. Most salvage yards have scales you can use. I'm sure they'd do it for free just to get a look at the car

Hey Bren, found this video that shows balancing. It gives a good example of what Rudy & Mike are describing and why it costs a bit to have done. www.youtube.com/watch?v=zli_leFnotI
