Ray, This session may be a good opportunity for my bus's valve gap issue. I may see you at your shop with my bus.

Hi Aki,
Sounds good. It would be great if you could make it. The motor will need to sit for a while to cool down before checking the valves.
Thanks, Ray

If the time is available I would like to see if I can get my tires balanced. If not that is fine too.
Also if you have a press I might need some wheel bearings pressed into my spare hubs. Lets see how this weekend turns out.

Hi AJ,
No problem balancing the tires. You're more than welcome to use the press.

Ray, I drove my bus yesterday around 35miles or so (to Plainwell ice cream shop). My bus did not run as smoothly as usual but at high speed, it ran OK. At Plainwell Ice cream shop, I started the bus. It started rough and died. This is my first experience with the engine dying after starting. So I decided to recheck the valve gaps. After I finished checking the right side for #1 and #2 cylinders, I opened the left side cover for #3 and #4 cylinders. Then I noticed several little curved metal pieces laying inside of the cover. I rechecked the gaps and closed the cover. I don't know what these pieces are. I kept them in a ziplock bag. I started the engine for a few seconds, but it did not run as it used to. so I shut it off. I should not drive the bus until I fix the problem. I'll be at the tech session, but I can't bring my bus. I'd appreciate any suggestions. See you Aug 7th. Aki

Aki,
Please bring the metal pieces. You got my curiosity; how big are they and what diameter?
Thanks, Ray

Sounds like broken head bolt washers.

Ray and Steve, Thanks for your reply. Yes, I'll bring them to the session. I checked the size of the pieces. The O.D. is 12.5 mm (approx 1/2'') and the ID is 7mm (9/32"). The material is not steel. It is like plastic. The thickness is less 2mm, I guess.
Thanks. Aki

Sounds like it might be a broken wave washer Aki if the pieces are curved? Check to see if any of the rocker arms can be slide back and forth. That is what happened last year to Wife's beetle on the way back from the fall bug run. New rocker arm assembly and some help from Dave T and we were back on the road.

Last week I ordered 2 complete rear wheel bearing sets for my Bus. Today I received just 2 inner bearings and 2 seals. I called the company I ordered from and he said that 2 more seals and 2 outer bearings will be shipped out.
Lets hope they arrive before the Tech Session
Sorry Aki I have no idea about the magical parts inside a type 4 engine.

This is tentative: pending parts on order arriving in time
Engine is removed and broken down to the short block. The work to be done is:
Jugs pulled, rings/cylinders checked for wear (not expecting issues as #1 looks great but want to check em prior to finally assembly) Heads reassembled, mounted (heads just need rockers reattached) Flywheel + seal attached/torqued, endplay checked Crank pulley attached FI Throttle body and manifold assembled and attached. Tin attached Time permitting, test fit of Bugpack exhaust
Nothing too difficult but a good practice for anybody that hasn't done this before or seen a long block broken down.
Just checked FEDEX tracking and my parts are at the front door so count me in for Sunday.
(Ray, do you have the engine stand back yet?)

Mike, don't think I'll have the engine stand back in time, so we'll use the metal table (works well too).

I can easily pack up my engine stand. I am not using it right now. Its is set up to build VW engines.
