As some of you know my motor had 'issues' this past Sunday. Today with the help of Dustin, Kenn, AJ, and John we pulled the motor from my beige car. Fearing the worst, I expected to find a hole in the block. So once it was pulled we got the fan shroud off so we could see the top of the block. No hole! What a relief that was. As we were tearing things down we discovered that the bolt for the pulley was loose. AJ and I had that very tight when we left his house. No good reason for it to have been loose. Now I need to finish getting it down to a long block and take it to Greg Hudson for diagnosis. I am hopefull that this recent problem is a repeat of the original problem and we can finally get it fixed and get this running better than ever. Time will tell.

Check the end play, sounds like your flywheel may have come be loose.

John checked the end play and it felt tight. What would cause the flywheel to come loose? That is the problem I had when the motor was first built.

I'm confused. Did the fly wheel come loose or the large pulley turning your generator (the one mounted to the crank)?
The flywheel nut is put on with a ton of torque (250#). There is a bearing inside the gland nut that is supposed to be greased. I suppose if that became dry and froze up the tranny shaft could bind up on it and start it to turn loose though that doesn't seem very plausible. I don't know if the tranny shaft turns in the direction required to loosen that nut.

I'm confused too The pulley that mounts to the crank is what came loose. So far it does not seem like the flywheel came loose. End play seems tight. In 2005 when the motor was new I had a similiar problem. Pulley came loose and cracked and we found the flywheel had come loose. Happened twice in 2005. Never really found out why. Guy that built the motor did a complete tear down and rebuild both times for free. After the second rebuild in 2005 it had been free from this problem until now. Motor goes to Greg tomorrow. I imagine we will have feedback from him fairly soon.

Greg has the motor. Flywheel was pulled and all of the 8 dowel pin holes were ovaled on both the flywheel and crank. There's two parts I will be replacing. Will be interesting to see what else he finds.

Chris: Just drive it. If you have all the tin and seals in it you should be fine.

Ya Chris don't blame the car for messing up when vital pieces were missing.

here is where I sit right now. I have the breast tin, that doesnt fit because an after market apron which is way off. Do I make a custom breast tin, or do I get a German rear apron? I will drive it next year, hopefully I dont have such a busy summer again I guess I am still learning about aircooleds, you guys dont have to be so harsh....

If it's just breast plate and apron you need just ask man I have a bunch of that type of stuff just collecting dust in the top of the garage, it may need a coat of paint but I'm sure I have it., Kenn

Sorry if that seemed harsh Chris. But honestly the motor should be problem free if all the necessary parts are in place. I want to see you driving and enjoying your car as we all have been this year. I have not seen the car once since its repaint and its been all summer.

Thanks for the encouragement guys. I am hoping to fab up that rear tin to replace the one that kinda doesnt fit right so it will all be in place. Does anyone know how to do axles seals, I have replaced mine twice and they still leak???

Chris, the bug me videos does a nice section on axle seals. Looked pretty straight forward to me, just tedious and messy.
