She definitely took the price gouging of the tow company too far. I am sure they held her car hostage until they could get the title to scrap it or part it out for $600. The question is did the police have her vehicle towed by their preferred(relatives/kickbacks) tow company or did she? Of course, the vehicle does not appear to be in a secured area and the tow company might have helped themselves to the contents of the vehicle. Monroe County Towing did this to me. The towing laws are written slanted for the tow companies to take the car within a month. The tow company held my tools, work boots and even my returnable cans. It was a $200 tow for less than 2 miles on a summer afternoon.

Tow fees are a flat rate typically. It sucks, but that's the way it goes. It's not a lot extra to get free towing with your insurance etc. And you usually get reimbursed. You eat it initially, but you take the bill to your insurance company. It's nice to drive a bug everywhere because all you need is a friend with a hitch.

I heard a phone interview with her boyfriend. He said she was upset because she was told her tow was going to be $75; which sounds like the going rate for a short tow. When she got there, they told her the bill was over $200. My guess is that the tow cost $75, but there was a daily fee if you leave the car there.
