I was amazed when I posted this question on the DdK site how many members play...Ohio Tom has been rockin for quite some time. Never heard him play but I would like to. I played a 1964 strat through a Fender Dual Showman amp when I was 17...sold that gear to move out west. Just this past January picked up a cheap Dean at a pawn shop..two more cheap guitars and two amps later I haven't missed more than 1 day per week playing. I just love it. Yes, 30 years of not playing I suck, but...there is no better release than this. Love a good vintage distorted guitar sound..any other stories?

I took lessons 47 years ago but quit when I had to practice instead of watching cartoons. Besides that I was told I couldn't carry a tune in a bucket(I think that means I wasn't very good) I now only enjoy listening, prefer country and old time rock. I'm of the age when Three dog night,Credance Clearwater, Cream and Stepnwolf were considered hard rock guess that shows how old this old fart is. I do have a banjo but can't play that either. Sorry from here Kenn

I don't play but my son does. Does that count? He pretty much tought himself. He has been in a few bands and has done way more with his music than I did playing drums. My band never got out of the basement. Sean plans to make a career out of music. Working now to save enough money to attend OIArt recording school in London Ontario. He is not into VW's though....

I would like to learn to play, I got to RIT all the time and look at guitars. I plan on picking one up sometime. My friend Dan plays as well but he never gets online so he isn't on this site!

Cool, well rufus, you must not be that much older than I...never too old to try again. I do wish I would have at least kept goofing around with the guitar. My mother had me taking organ lessons for about 10 years as a kid...(great aspirations of hearing her son play in church) I did play in some competitions but back in the 60s and 70s my style of playing wouldn't have flown well in church..nothing sacrilegious by any means, just rocky. After I sold my guitar in the late 70s I started getting into bodybuilding for the next30 years and that and fast VWs is about all I had time for...now I still lift but it hurts...bad. So, time to make music..good times.
Hey Dustin, take a trip to your nearest Guitar Center sometime...they have dozens of guitars and amps that you can just plug in, mess around with and just have a great time. I go there in GR about once or twice a month. It is so cool.

GbugG, I'm 56 but I couldn't play now blew my ear drums in the early 70's in SE Asia playing with big guns The Corp never made mention of the after effects of being a sniper. I have a hard enough time just hearing normal conversation. The tone I would hear wouldn't be what everyone else hears probaly wouldn't be pretty. Everything I listen to is too loud for a normal hearing range and I don't care to lose an more hearing than I've alread lost. And todays thumpy rap crap and thumpy bass drives my hears crazy to the point of pain. So I'll be content to hear what I hear. And leave the playing to someone else. Later Kenn

I do browse RIT in Holland occasionally but I wouldn't want to play there since I am no good. I would rather buy one then practice at home instead of making a fool out of myself in public haha.

that's what's cool about Guitar Center, there's so much noise goin on that no one can even hear you play. What sucks is there's always someone who comes in that is just phenomenal and pretty much makes you unplug and go a couple of rows over..no one really pays attention to you though. It is fun to be able to play a real les paul or strat and not have to pay for it. They also have a huge section where you can play all these stomp pedals and stuff...I've spent hours there..then I buy a set of strings or picks for $3.95 and leave..cool.

Cool, I'll have to get up there sometime and check it out. When I am at RIT they always ask if I wanted to play something and I always say no because then they will know I can't play. I have too much going on right now but hopefully soon I can actually commit the time and money to buy a guitar.

that's what's cool about asian made guitars now....check out Craigs list...lots of decent electrics for under $100, you can also buy a 10 watt Marshall practice amp brand new for $79. The sound is awesome, both clean and overdriven and the loudness..I don't think I've ever cranked it past 3 or 4. I bought my used Epiphone SG with aftermarket pickups and tuners for $65...heck, take a family of 4 out to a mid level restaurant and you'll dump that amount. Got for it Dustin, that way anytime you feel like it, you can pluck away.

About five years ago I bought a 32.00 dollar guitar and a 30.00 DVD of guitar for dummies. I now mostly play an Art&Lutherie electric acuistic guitar and also have an actual VW electric guitar I snagged on Ebay. I set up my 66 to have a radio that accepts it so I can play with it at shows and stuff. I really enjoy playing and can even sing a little bit but I'm really more of a chord player. My fingerstyle sucks! Also my memory sucks so I usually need sheet music chords to play.
Anyone that wants to can play as well (or mostlikely better) than I. All it takes is time and the love of music.
Dan
