Wow!
What was the deal with breakdowns after the Bug Run?
Saw a tub buggy well off the highway before getting off for Hastings. Three Beetles on the side of the road on the exit.
One Beetle on a trailer beside the side of the road heading for Hastings...hood up.
Just outside of Hastings the Coral colored Ghia convert by the side of the road...very immobile. Since the driver and the passenger were a little older I stopped. This car was going nowhere.
It had apparently had started to run rough by the time they had come from Owosso to Martin, but they could have gotten home with that. The real problem was that the brakes had frozen solid. No pedal movement at all. You could not even touch the passenger side rear wheel, and the front wheel was not nearly as hot, but it was hot enough to burn my finger. I would suspect bad brake hoses, but the car was going nowhere.
They were able to contact their son, who has a flatbed and was on the way to bring them back. I offered to get them water, or take them (one at a time) to an air-conditioned gas station or restaurant, but they had water and were just going to wait.
Hope everything works out O.K. They are headed to see Jim Green as soon as possible with the KG.
On another note, there were some very cool cars at a show in Hastings. Did not see any VWs, but I only took a quick pass through.
Had a great time, pretty sunburned.
I did not notice the trophy pass until I passed it on the way out, but I did see Art start a well-deserved People's Choice run down the track. Congrats!
Dave

There were 2 Bugs on the side of the road on the way North. I stopped for one. I never did get a call from them..... so I hope it was just out of gas.

Ally did ok. It was running well. I stopped to get something out of Miejers and when I got out Ally was not starting.... Turned on the backup fuel pump till it pressurized then was ok. tuned off pump and was ok. Think there was a temp vapor lock due to the weather. Go figure. She goes under the knife next weekend or so anyway.

I was driving the white beetle on the side of the road going north. I'm having some fuel pressure regulator issues but I made it home.
Isn't that just to be expected with vintage VW's?

Patrick was just ahead of me in line... Who was the 10th winner? Last count I made just before we ran down the track was 9 - the yellow (non-Ruffuss) Thing being the 9th in line. Besides Patrick and me, were there any other Goodvolks members in the top 9? Is the Green Ghia guy from Marshall a member yet? I had a great time this weekend thanx to you guys. This year has been pretty rough for me and I'm not sure where I'd be right now without you clowns there with me... Best wishes to all.

Further to Saturday night's discussion: is it the accelerator pedal or the cable? IT'S THE CABLE!
Slipped off again tonight on Dickman Road, limped into K-mart parking lot. The cable end was mangled so badly that when I tried to slip it back in, it just fell off in my hand.
Caught a ride home and returned w/ the Sonoma and Tow Bar.
If you had asked me back in '72 when that car was sitting on a showroom floor somewhere, if I thought I'd actually have a neighbor who sold VW accelerator cables out of his garage 38 years later, whaddya think I would've said?
Thanx, George!

Just saw I missed a call from you. Now I see why you called. Sorry Art. Looks like you got it taken care of though.

No problem, Bren. All my relatives in this town are old and don't drive. Had her back in the driveway not too long after dark. Thanx anyway.

He only had one, AJ. But you can bet I will. That's occurred to me before and since the 72 and 74 both take the same cables there's no excuse not to!
There's also a "cheat" fix for this in John Muir's book "How To Keep Your Volkswagen Alive". I read about it this morning - LOL!
