As some of you know, we have been planning a Get Together in a central location of a few VW Clubs. It has been decided upon, in a town called Winamac, Indiana at the Tippecanoe River State Park, in the Potawatomi Group Camp Area.
The entire area has been rented out by the Harsh Winters VW Club for the dates of June 4-6Th. The group is broken up into 5 areas, four of which are sleeping cabins. Each area has seven primitive cabins that can sleep up to six, a Unit Lodge with electricity and a stone fireplace and beds that can sleep twelve, and a unisex latrine with water. With the 28 individual cabins, there could be 28 individual families, or a mixture of families in some, and some cabins can be used for those that don't care who they house with! "singles" could also use the lodges as they also sleep twelve.
Each of the four cabin areas have a large fire pit with ample seating.
The centrally located HUB has a very large mess hall that has a fully equipped kitchen, with seating for 160 people and a fireplace. There is also a pit toilet and a nice shower area.
There are a few drawbacks however. No outside camping or campers allowed. Although if you were to bring a bus and slept in it. I doubt any body would be checking on that. There is a family campground for those who would want to tent camp, but it is about a mile away.
There is a one time weekend pass fee of $7 per car for those out of state and $5 for those with IN plates.
The plan is to get there Friday, get settled in and get ready for some grub. Bring a dish to pass and break out some grills and cooks some burgers and dogs. We're hoping to have an inflatable TV screen that we can set up in the main kitchen and let kids watch movies. Then lets have a nice big Bonn fire and a few drinks! Alcohol is allowed. Some of the guys from Circle City VW Club will be hooking us up with some fire wood. DONT bring any firewood over a state line!!! There are fines for that. Saturday morning breakfast is on your own. Plans could be made there for breakfast too if someone wants to fire up grills again, anything is possible. Mid morning we will take a leisurely drive through the big(exaggeration) town of Winamac to get us VW people noticed. We will then stop at an icecream place along the way. Then we will stop at Winamac City Park where we have reserved a Pavilion that hold 100 people. It is located at the front of the park where everybody drives in. We can showcase the cars there and have lunch, (bring your own). After we are done with the park, we will return to the Camp Site and again set up for a cookout the same as Friday night. There is a large shopping area not too far from the campgrounds for buying food and goods. After dinner, we will get ready and cruise to the drive in movie theater. They will be giving us group rates for the movies. If there is an "R" movie it will be the 2ND show. We will post what is showing when it is available to us sometime in April. After the show we will cruise back and get the fire pit started again. Sunday, breakfast on your own again. Make sure place is policed up and cruise out when you're ready.
Check in time is 3pm Friday and check out is by noon on Sunday.
The cost of the cabins are $30 for the weekend, yep that's right, only $30 for both nights. If you would like to have two or three couples in one cabin and split the $30 cost, that's fine too! I would like to see all 28 cabins taken as this is what we are relying on to pay for the cost of the camp site. Lodge sleeping will only be $5 per person for both nights. Remember the lodges sleep 12 and others will be in there too!
Please email bigjoe@harshwintersvw.com for any questions. Doug Willis and Tim Shannon can also be contacted to answer any questions too.
If you would like to reserve a cabin, you can Paypal $30 to bigjoe@harshwintersvw.com and leave a comment "for a cabin". If you want a sleeping bunk in a lodge or if you will be sleeping in your bus. paypal $5 per person "for the Lodge" or $5 "for the vehicle"(no person cost)
Thanks for checking this out. Hope to hear from you!
