Here's a pic of the outlet on the oil pump cover and the inlet tapped in the main oil galley on the block on my Solo Vee engine. (Please don't look at the cobwebs, I need to get my priorities fixed)

Can you just change the oil pump cover or do you have to change the pump and the cover?

Well Im not an expert on this stuff, but from what Ive read You have to tap and plug the outlet in the body of the pump (any pump will do) so the oil is forced out through the cover, its the part in the block that takes some machining (or a lot of nerve and a drill bit/ tapper ). Im going to be switching to a 26mm pump. And it looks like Ill need a new pump cover.

I highly recommend the Berg pump cover, the one with the relief spring. This will save your filter from losing its seal on those cold starts. Speaking of filters here is a list that I have been collecting of different ones. Do you set your valves at o.oo ? I was just reading in Hot Vw that with hipo pushrods you set the gap so that the pushrod just turns with your fingies (like a chevey 350) is this true? I got some elephant feet adjusters on the way and also the hi po mounting for the rockers but Im using stock rockers (slightly modded for the elephant feet).

Bren, Yes they do some are fatter then others and some are longer then others so location of your remote oil filter may make a difference.. Dansam, I usually set mine at .002 making sure a .004 feeler gage wont slide through. This would be on a steel or chromoly push rod not aluminum.

NEVER rev a cold engine period!!! I have seen O-rings fail on the filters I use the $15 HP filters on the dragBug and make sure it's warmed up ,I feel the filter ;D, Sometimes the temp gage is just to slow in the stageing lanes ;D My filter bracket is mounted on the #3 exhast,That way if I need to pull the motor I don't need to remove the oil lines ;D

For the deep sumps I braze the pickup tube in place so no worrys about it failing and I clamp a Cow magnet to it ;D if something does come apart hopfully the magnet picks it up before the pump does ;D Don't forget to Loctite the nut on the pickup have fun installing it to I have a bent wrench I use ;D

A wheel well is a very bad idea for anything that can fling rocks and rupture a filter. Oil and tires at speed are even worse than no oil in your engine.
You can die from one...
