Well the pics above were done at lunch and I admit It was a rush job and I really didnt look it over all that well. When I got home from work I was excited to split the case and look at what bearings Id need. Well it was line bored and had 20 under .835 thrust stamped into it. One of the main bearings inside has on it 0 10 025 BC290 Ill find out what all that means when I order my rotating assy. Then I noticed the chunk missing out of the block on the hole where the starter bolt goes through. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!! CRUD WHAT THE!!! So I looked through the box for the missing piece to jb welf back on but could not find it. Then I looked at the rough broken off part and it really does not look like new damage. Im not sure if the dude "neglected" to mention this but Im pissed. Oh well I sent an e mail demanding explaination. Im thinking its fixable but I wanted this motor to be perfect.... We shall see what the seller is willing to do to make this right. Ok might need more than cleaning, what the heck!!! This dude that sold me these has some splaining to do!! Not HAPPY..... inside looks good

Don't want to add to the fire but, it looks like the oil pump pickup stud is broken off also, shouldn't it extend through for the sump plate to bolt to? It's not a big deal, an easy fix, but, tough to do after the case is bolted together.

Florencio Rodriguez = farfromstock Im not 100% sure he is a crook, but he is on my "naughty" list for this year. He does not seem to think he did anything wrong. He states in another ad (which I never saw) he explained the damage to all so I should have no issues with the deal. On my end I bought 2 heads that were supposed to be fully machined but I ended up having to redue the spark plug holes at an 80.00 expense to me. The case is usable (Im repairing the broken piece as we speak) but frankly I did not want a fixer upper and never would have paid the money for it I woulda made my own case out of a better core. Anyway Im busy making some lemonaid out of all the lemons. It will still be a cool engine. the heads for the most part are good and the case for the most part is good. I will fix the bad and go on with life. I hope the carbs are better!! On another note Brothers Vw is the bomb and was VERY helpfull with all sorts of tech questions and has the absolute best prices around. I very much recommend them. In other rough news It turns out my main bearings for the "new" block are a funky size that is between stock size and + 1 size. So I got +1 bearings and I need to take the case and the bearings to the machine shop in bay city to have the bearings machined to the case.

Before doing this make sure that the bearing are going to fit the crank too.

Hey thanks for the catch on the oil pickup stud broke off Id have missed that. Ill ad it to my to fix list I have the whole bearing thing under control. After I get the rotating assy next week (its on the way) Ill Take the bearings case and crank to city machine shop in Bay City and we will make it right, including platigaging the crank. And maybe cc'ing the heads (I may try it myself if I feel like it) Ok on with the case repair photos. started by jb welding a big ugly washer to the case while at it I decided to fix up some machining marks to make it pretty. next I fitted some cardboard to use as a former more jb weld and more looking good. And will add a little more strength. when Im done it will look normal'ish Next.... clean, sand and paint. then off to the machine shop..... or machine first then pretty it up.

Hey Dan, I wouldn't worry about the piece out of the case all the torque is on the other side, but you got it covered anywho ;D I think you'l need some Velosity stacks for the carbs to make the work properly too,Good building dude

Ya think the stacks need to be in the air cleaners? I was wondering about that.

Dansam:
I run velocity stacks on my 40 IDFs under genuine K&N filters. I really dislike the Bugpack style fake K&Ns. When you can see pinpoints of light through a filer, it's not filtering much.
My setup seems to work fine, and the throttle response is a bit crisper.
I would never run a street car without filters, no matter how cool it looked. My Moto Guzzi LeMans ran just velocity stacks, and I could only ever get 3 years out of it before having to do a bore, rings and pistons. This was running it 3500 miles or so a season. Of course, bikes generally breathe dirtier air, but it does get expensive.

Hmm my have to buy a set of stacks. I have K&n "looking" have not had time to inspect them to see if they are real or not. Goofy system for holding the filters together though. Im not going to screw with the carbs at all till I get to that part of the build. they are now sealed in large plastic zip loc bags to keep all the crud out as they are so nice and clean. Maybe I wont even have to rebuild em. Ill be taking out Allys engine this week and throwing it into the van. After that Ill get to building my motor.

Those look like the filters that have the little clip to hold them on? I don't think the stacks will fit under them. I really like the aluminum base plates and filter tops that come with the CB linkage. Those filters would be tall enough.

Forgot to mention that the carbs look great. A couple of guys I know actually like the castings of the Spanish Webers a little better than the Italians, they like the finish a bit better. Personally, I don't see any difference.
I would wait until you get your motor together, and the car running and driving to see what needs to be dealt with your carburation before buying your velocity stacks. Also, you air cleaners look a little short if you are looking for torque, since a longer stack would be what you would use.
Here is a VERY cool experiment. Make a round circle with your mouth and suck in air. Then, make a circle with your thumb and cup your hand, suck in again, and move your hand to your mouth. You will be amazed at the difference. Same thing happens to you car.
It's a good thing.
To do any meaningful tuning, however, your do really need to do it on a dyno.
