Hmmm, I never like re-ringing a VW motor, for the price, it's just as easy to put on new P+C's. But, if you are going to do it, one piece of advice, measure the ring grooves, most rings come in different thicknesses, make sure you get the right ones! George may be able to help with rings. I recommend good ol' cima/mahle. Unless you want to go with total $teal!

Grant rings, they are a lot cheaper then buying new P/C. Call Paul Boss at 989-224-3913

How many miles on current P+C's? Cylinders warp over time, even when driven gently, and the best rings in the world can't compensate for warped cylinders. If the old rings went bad, what do the cylinders look like? Do you have a good hone that holds the cylinders square, or will you be taking them to a machine shop? Is this for a race car that will be torn down every couple of runs? Is this a show car that will only be driven 500 miles a year? Or, is this a regular "driver" that would like to see 50,000 miles before another teardown? Why risk it, it looks like a pretty nice Ghia.

Who's to say that the new cylinders are straight or round. 94s sell for $235.00 a set and rings maybe $40.00. Big difference for a guy on a budget. My last set of 94s I ring rung them and through them on a STF engine and sold it to a guy and he stated that it ran like a bat out of hell. As long as the cylinders specs and ring gap are good do a nice hone job and throw on a new set of rings on and let her eat ;D

Doesn't look like the heads sealed to the cylinders real well either. Now that you have it torn down should you also lap the valves? I did it on mine and re-ringed my original pistons and honed the cylinders. It is a stock 1600. I am very pleased with how it runs now.

Yes lapping valves is on the list . Call George and ordered P&Cs Kit after I called Don the owner up & asked him to come out and see his toy ripped apart . Don doesn't get to see this end of things vary often (Never) so Engines 101 . I showed him the #4 cyl. push rod that had damage from lack of clearance in head casting by rocker . and areas in cyl. that were out of apec. And the leakage past cyl. & head area . I told Don that I ordered a compleat Engine gasket kit and showed him what it should cover . First day of class & Don had FUN .

I have some valve grinding stones if you need to borrow them. They are for hand use, but, they clean up the seats pretty nicely.

I bought them off a guy named Ken in Middleville, he said he had them around for as long as he could remember.

My set is just three stones, to clean up the seats, hand use, 3 angles. No grinder though.
