I have a question: What are the rules of a Historic Plate? I only ask because a Covert, Mi cop tracked my bug down in the camp ground that I was staying at this weekend and basically threatened to impound the plate and the vehicle. Tow it to Covert's impound lot and then make me tow it back to Holland on a flatbed. But since he was was "such a nice guy" his words not mine, he decided a stern waring has good enough. For now....

Cops Don't get me started!!! I didn't put a historical plate on my 64 Bug because I heard u can get stopped IF your not going to a Parade or a CarShow What I did was find a 'Year of the car' plate and had it regestered to the 64 There good for the life of the car 'Non-expirering', as a historic is only good for 10 yrs and the younger cops think your from 'Out of State' cuz It's looks different,But I heard also that the people were complaning they couldn't drive their car only afew times a year so the law was changed?? the PDF file won't load on this POS so??? Fracking cop has nothing better to do?? I would write a Letter to the Covert newspaper :)If you were 'in the right', Your spending money in there town ect .ect It would be a COLD day before I'd go back,Madmike

I run a historical plate on my Ghia and I ran one on my 78 Rabbit. Never had a problem.
I have a 1969 year plate just sitting in the garage for the Ghia someday. Knowing this I may just register it to be on the safe side.

For those of you with POS like Mikes, and for MIKE ;D
The PDF says Historical plates can only be used for events such as Historical Club Activities, parades, and Car Show's. and in BOLD..Cannot be used for routine transportation..
I almost bought a pair of 1970 plates from the guy at MVVC, but 1970 is a UGLY mustard yellow color..I will stick with my BLUE plate for now.

They only cost 30 bucks though. It is nice to have. I just renewed all of my plates and the lady behind the counter said the same thing. Only for parades, and club meetings not for driving.

I do not understand, You were camping and not driving, maybe you were going to a club thing or show....how would he know(or care if it was not on the road)? You are the first person I have ever heard of having a problem with something like this.......Sounds like he wanted to harass someone and you were the lucky one. When I'm driving,I'm always going to or coming from a club meeting or a car show even if I have to camp somewhere .

Their are cruises everyday of the week, in every town and county of Michigan. And remember if you can't dazzel em with brilliance, baffle em with BS. Cops are for the most part OK just doing their job, every once in awhile you find a prick. Wanting to act big tough and mean. Later Kenn

Can't you also take it out for the occasional drive on a nice day. I believe it says that is OK somewhere. I also believe you are allowed to be taking it for service or taking it out for tune up work. Maybe I read that about collector car insurance and not the plate, not sure.
Next time park the car so the plate is not easily seen when parked....

Historic plates USED to be cool...unfortunately the street rodders started using them, saying that a '38 Buick with a 350, disk brakes and an automatic transmission deserved a historic plated, and drove them everywhere.
This sort of abuse is now being tolerated less and less. The idea of the historic plate was a good one that got corrupted. It was for exactly what they said it was...to keep a vehicle that is not used regularly legal without having to spend $60 or so registering the car every year for about about a dozen drives. It was a very good idea, and a wonderful thing to have. I never had any issues with it until recently.
Now, in some areas it is being enforced pretty aggressively. Too bad.
I either use a regular plate or a year of vehicle plate now.
Classic car insurance is another thing. You are generally allowed a number of miles, and it's a great deal. I use Haggerty, and like it a bunch. One thing, however. Send them new photos of the car every few years. In case of a claim, it helps a great deal.
