My car has a 1500 with a 009 distributor and I've heard you can set the timing 10 degree's advanced. Has anyone else done this, whats the best position to set the timing? I'm getting ready to adjust my valves and timing so I was curious what works best.

My Ghia has the same set up as yours and this is how I adjust my timing. After locating TDS for #1 Cylinder I rotate the crank until the space between the tick marks on the pulley line up with the split in the case. I believe the 7.5 and 5 degree mark. Then I index my distributor so rotor points at #1 plug wire. I then pull out my test light and clamp it at the negative terminal on the coil and ground out the other end. Rotate the distributor in a clock wise direction until the test light comes on and the points disconnect.
After you button every thing up fire up the car let it warm. Here come the part where I show my red-neck skills that I try to hide so much. When the car is warm loosen the distributor hold down clamp while the engine is still running and rotate the distributor ever so slightly in both directions until you find that sweet spot.
The reason for this is because every engine is different and tolerances are not in speck you will never be able to correctly time a engine by the book if it is old. Just time it by ear it has all ways worked for me.

From what I can tell the crankshaft pulley only has two notches, I thought it was supposed to have three. The notches are about a 1/4 inch apart, maybe less, would that be 0 and 7.5 but no mark for 10?

Ok you had me stumped on this one I always thought that the crank pulley had three notches too. So I had to make a trip to my parts garage. What I found is that I had 2 pulleys with 2 notches and all the rest had 3 notches. I lined up the key way slot with the 2 different pulleys and found that the 2 notches close together match on both pulleys. After looking through my book.
This is what I found
With 3 notches The lone notch is 0 degrees or TDC Top Dead Center Next notch to the right about 7/16" is 7.5 degrees BTDC Before Top Dead Center Next notch to the right about 1/8" is 10 degrees BTDC Before Top Dead Center
On the 2 notch pulley The notch on the left is 7.5 degrees BTDC The notch on the right about 1/8" away is 10 degrees BTDC It is just missing the 0 degree TDC mark
Hope this helps AJ

With that said I am running a 10 degrees advanced. Will this be alright? Should I set it at 7.5 degrees? It seems to run alright, without the 0 degree notch how do I adust my valves? Do I adjust them using the notch I set my timing to? If there is anyone that can hold my hand in the grand rapids area I would greatly appreciate it. When I lived in arizona there was an old man that lived around the corner that would work on my car for me for cheap, so I'm kinda learning how things work.

AJ I appreciate the offer but GR is a hike from k-zoo just to set my timing, it runs fine where its at. I'm sure I'll be fine for this weekend. Thanks for the offer.

Timing an 009! I usually time an 009 by total advance, because each engine and dizzy can vary so much, especially the 009. I've always used 32 degrees total advance for my max, that seems to be the agreed upon maximum you should feed an ACVW. You will need to make a few marks on the pulley with a piece of chalk, it's a LOT easier with a degree pulley. You will need a mark around the 30 degree point. I set my timing at about 5 degrees static, with the engine off. Hook up your timing light. Start the engine and bring the RPM's up until the dizzy stops advancing (using the timing light), than turn the dizzy until your 30 degree mark is lined up with the split in the case. You can then "fine tune" it from that point, with confidence that you will no be feeding it too much advance and possibly causing detonation. I do this because 009's have been known to have a large tolerance in their advance curve from one distributor to the next. Let's say for instance, dizzy A has a total advance of 22 degrees, static timing at 7.5 BTDC would net 29.5 degrees total advance, no problem. dizzy B has a total advance of 26 degrees (4 degrees difference is EASILY possible between 009's) static timed to 7.5 will net 33.5 degrees, enough to cause detonation and possible engine damage.

vw1s, thank you for the advice. Is there a way to map out the 30 degree mark on a stock pulley?

Well I've got it static timed, I think. It still seems to be running a little funny. Would someone be willing to bring a timing light with them to the bug run, and give me a quick lesson on timing this pig. I would really appreciate it.
